The difference between Brands and Suppliers
Assigning a Brand against a Product
Introduction
This short User Manual will take you through the process of creating a Brand in the Cybertill system.
We recommend creating all Brands before creating Products within Admin > Products and Categories.
What is a Brand?
In summary, a Brand is an extra reporting filter.
Once you’ve been trading on Cybertill for a little while, you’ll no doubt want the system to tell you how much money you’ve taken. In most of the system’s sales reports, you’ll get the option to filter your results, i.e. to choose exactly which products, categories, Brands etc. you want to see the sales for. As a retailer you may want to run a report for a particular ‘Brand’ of goods that you sell e.g. the drink ‘Fanta’ is a Brand that belongs to ‘Coca Cola’ but there are multiple ‘Fanta’ products that you sell.
Now, before Cybertill can tell them this, it needs to have some way of knowing which products belong to the Brand ‘Fanta’ or ‘Coca Cola’. In other words, it is a way of ‘grouping’ products. That might seem obvious to you, but it’s not to Cybertill! Cybertill is a computer system - it doesn’t have the same pattern recognition skills or understanding of English that you do! This is where Brands come in.
When you come to run sales reports, you’ll get the option of filtering your report by “Brand” (just like you can filter by stock ref, season etc). Whenever you enter the details of a drink into Cybertill, as well as entering the obvious stuff (name, price etc), you should ensure they set its Brand.
If they do this correctly, then come reporting time, they’ll be able to report by Brand.
Adding a Brand
Firstly,
- log into RetailStore/ CharityStore with your Username* & Password*.
- Click into the Admin Menu.
Under the Products and Categories section,
- select Brands.
You’ll be taken to a page listing all the Brands that have been entered into your system so far.
If you are yet to create any Brands, then your Brand List will appear empty.
To create a Brand,
- select New, located at the bottom of the page.
- Fill in all relevant fields.
Note: the mandatory fields will display an asterisk * next to them and they therefore need to be completed before the page can be saved.
Enter the details as required.
| Name |
Name of the Brand. Note: this is a mandatory field. |
| Description | Description of the Brand to help you identify it. |
| Active | Tick this box if it is a current brand that you stock. If not, untick to mark as inactive. |
| List Order |
If you want your Brands to appear in an order, enter the order number. Example: enter ‘1’ if you wish for this Brand to appear first. |
| Website Availability | If you have an integrated website, select the site if you want the Brand to appear. |
| List on eBay |
If unticked, you will not be able to list any products associated with this Brand on eBay. Note: this field is ticked by default. |
When you are completed the relevant fields,
- select Save from the bottom of the page.
Note: you can select Save and Add another to automatically add another Brand.
- Click the Back to list link at the bottom of the screen, and it’ll take you back to the previous page.
You should see your new Brand added to the list.
- Repeat for all of Brands.
The difference between Brands and Suppliers
In some cases, your ‘Suppliers’ and ‘Brands’ may be the same company (e.g. all “Acme”- branded goods are supplied directly to you by the manufacturer named “Acme”). But that isn’t always the case. There are plenty of retailers who order branded goods from several different Suppliers (e.g. “Acme”- branded goods can be sourced from several different wholesalers).
For that reason, Cybertill will always force you to distinguish between Brand and Supplier.
Assigning a Brand against a Product
For those retailers who added a new Brand to the Cybertill system after creating the Product, it isn’t too late to assign it.
To do this,
- within Admin > Products and Categories find the Product you wish to assign the Brand to.
From the Edit Product page,
- scroll down to the section labelled Properties.
- In the Brand field, select the Brand from the dropdown list that you wish to assign to this Product.
- Scroll down to the bottom of the page and select Save.
You should receive a success message:
